Crucial Compatibility Rules: Stems, PCBs & Keycaps

1. Keycap Compatibility (Choc V1 vs. Choc V2 & KS-33)

Older low-profile switches (like Kailh Choc V1) used a proprietary two-prong stem that required specialized keycaps. Modern mini switches like the Kailh Choc V2 and Gateron KS-33 Low Profile 2.0 feature standard MX-style cross-stems. This allows you to mount most standard MX keycap sets, though shorter keycap profiles (like DSA, XDA, or OEM) are recommended to prevent keycaps from bottoming out against the keyboard top plate.

2. PCB Hot-Swap Socket Compatibility

Low-profile switches use pin placements designed for low-profile PCBs. They are not drop-in compatible with standard full-height MX hot-swap PCBs. Always ensure your keyboard PCB explicitly supports Gateron KS-33 or Kailh Choc V2 hot-swap sockets.

Can You Hand-Lube Low-Profile Mini Switches?

Absolutely. Because mini switches have compact housing chambers, stock factory lubrication can sound slightly thin or pingy due to spring resonance.

Hand-lubing mini switches requires precision:

1. Bottom Housing Rails: Apply a paper-thin layer of Krytox 205g0  for linear and Tribosys 3203 for tactile switches to the bottom housing side rails.

2. Springs: Lightly bag-lube or brush-lube springs with Krytox 105 high-viscosity oil to eliminate hollow metallic crunch.

3. Stem: Apply a paper-thin layer of lube to the sides of the stem that will be making contact with the bottom housing.

   1. Tactile Legs: Avoid applying heavy lube to tactile switch legs (like on the Gateron Banana or Chocolate) to preserve the sharp tactile bump.

4. Close the top housing: Ensure that the stem leg and pointing in the right direction towards the metal leaf and away from the RGB light window. Once this is confirmed light up the top housing to the bottom housing ensuring that the area where the RGB light shines though matches up. 
   1. Note that trying to close the top housing when the stem is in the wrong direction may damage the stem and metal leaf.
