Picking your own switches, keycaps, and keyboard is the best part of this hobby — dialing in the exact sound and feel you want is genuinely addictive. Actually assembling that board? That's the part that trips up a lot of first-time builders, and honestly, plenty of experienced ones too.

That's what our custom keyboard build and assembly service is for. Pick your parts from thockking.com, tell us how you want it built, and our team assembles, tunes, and tests it before it ever leaves the workbench — starting at $19.95.

Here's exactly what you're getting, what it costs, and — just as important — what this service isn't, so you know exactly what you're signing up for.

What Is the Thock King Keyboard Assembly Service?

It's a mechanical keyboard build service: you choose the keyboard, switches, and keycaps from our catalog, and our technicians handle the physical assembly — pin inspection, switch installation, stabilizer work, and full key-registration testing — before it ships.

In plain terms: you shop, we build. No bent pins, no installing keycaps and no three-hour lubing session on a Tuesday night (unless that's your thing...).

🎯 Who it's for

Anyone who wants a custom-feeling board without doing the assembly themselves — first-timers, busy enthusiasts, and gift-givers

🧰 What we touch

Switches, keycaps, and (on the upgraded tier) stabilizers — all sourced from Thock King

⏱️ What it saves you

Hours of pin-checking, hand-lubing, and stabilizer tuning — plus the risk of a torn hot-swap socket on attempt #1

🚫 What it's not

A full custom-mod shop — see the honest scope note below

How the Build & Assembly Service Works

You don't need to be a keyboard expert to order this — you just need to know roughly what you want. Here's the actual flow:

  1. Choose your keyboard.

  2. Choose your switches.

    • Pick any switch line we carry, in stock form or hand-lubed and filmed — your call, selected right on the switch's product page.

    • Buying a barebones keyboard? You get 10% off your switches automatically.

  3. Choose your keycaps (optional).

  4. Choose your stabilizers (optional — this is what separates the two service tiers).

    • Most barebones and pre-assembled boards already ship with usable stock stabilizers. If you want a specific set — stock or hand-lubed — swap them in from our stabilizer collection.

  5. We build, tune, and test it.

    • Every switch pin gets inspected for bends before install. Every key gets tested to confirm it registers. If you're starting from a fully-assembled board and we're swapping parts, whatever gets removed — stock switches, stock keycaps, stock stabilizers — ships back to you in the box. Nothing gets tossed.

Heads up: because compatibility and quality control depend on it, this service is exclusively for keyboards, switches, keycaps, and stabilizers purchased directly through the Thock King website — we're not set up to receive outside components or boards for this service.

Pricing: Two Tiers, No Hidden Fees

Tier

Price

What's Included

Switches + Keycaps

$19.95

Pin inspection, switch installation, keycap installation, full key-registration testing

Switches + Keycaps + Stabilizers

$29.95

Everything above, plus stabilizer installation/replacement — the fix for the stock-stab rattle most boards ship with

Which tier do you actually need?

  • ✅ Happy with the stabilizers your board already comes with, or building on a board that doesn't need stab work? → $19.95

  • ✅ Want a quiet, consistent spacebar and modifiers without sourcing stab-specific grease and doing it yourself? → $29.95

Either tier includes the same core promise: every key tested, zero bent pins, nothing damaged in the build.

Why Not Just Build It Yourself?

Short answer: you absolutely can, and if you love the process, you should keep doing it. But a first build (or even a fifth build) comes with a few genuine, easy-to-underestimate hurdles:

  • Hot-swap sockets are fragile. A switch pin bent even slightly can push against the socket instead of sliding in — best case, a dead key; worst case, a socket torn off the PCB entirely, which usually means a repair with a soldering iron rather than a quick fix.

  • Stabilizers take real practice. Stock stabs are the single biggest cause of a rattly, ticky spacebar, and getting them properly lubed and seated takes patience most people don't budget for on their first attempt.

  • Lubing switches doesn't scale down. Hand-lubing isn't hard, it's just repetitive — a 65% board is roughly 65–68 switches, a TKL is 87–90, and a full-size board is 104–110+. That's real time, even before you get to stabilizers.

None of that is a reason to skip building your own board if that's part of the hobby for you — plenty of us genuinely love the process, and if you want to learn, our complete switch-lubing guide walks through it step by step. But if what you actually want is the finished board — not the process — that's exactly the gap this service fills.

Being Upfront: What This Service Doesn't Cover

We'd rather tell you this straight than have you assume the wrong thing. This is an assembly and tuning service, not a full custom-mod shop. A few things it does not include:

  • No soldering (socketed switch installs and stabilizer swaps only)

  • No plate modding, foam modding, or tape modding

  • No case/plate modifications of any kind

If you're chasing a deep, heavily-modded custom sound with foam and tape mods layered in, that's a more involved project than this service covers — and that's genuinely fine. What we are offering is a straightforward, honest trade: you skip the fiddly, error-prone assembly steps, and you get a working, tested, tuned board back. That's the whole pitch — no more, no less.

The Best Use Case: Gifting

A custom mechanical keyboard is one of the most genuinely thoughtful gifts you can give someone in this hobby — but handing over a box of loose parts (or a board with a dead key because a pin got bent in transit) kind of ruins the moment.

Tell us the vibe, and we'll build toward it:

  • 🔊 Deep and tactile

  • 🎐 Light and clacky

  • 🖤 Clean and stealthy

Whatever direction you pick, it arrives feeling personal, premium, and ready to type on immediately — zero assembly required on the recipient's end.
